The Doom of Babylon

1 ^aThen one of the ^bseven angels who had the ^cseven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you ^dthe judgment of the ^egreat prostitute who ^fsits on many waters, 2 with whom ^gthe kings of the earth committed acts of sexual immorality, and ^hthose who live on the earth ⁱbecame drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.” 3 And ^jhe carried me away ^{▼▼Or in spirit
,} ^lin the Spirit ^minto a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a ⁿscarlet beast, full of ^oblasphemous names, having ^pseven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman ^qwas clothed in purple and scarlet, and ^{▼▼Lit gilded}adorned with gold, precious ^{▼▼Lit stone}stones, and pearls, holding in her hand ^ta gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her sexual immorality, 5 and on her forehead a name was written, ^{▼▼Or “MYSTERY...”}a ^vmystery: “ ^wBABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF ^xTHE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” 6 And I saw the woman drunk with ^ythe blood of the ^{▼▼Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s people}saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered ^{▼▼Lit with great wonder}greatly. 7 And the angel said to me, “Why ^{▼▼Lit have you wondered}do you wonder? I will tell you the ^acmystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the ^adseven heads and the ten horns.

8 “ ^aeThe beast that you saw ^afwas, and is not, and is about to ^agcome up out of the ^ahabyss and ^{▼▼One early ms is going
,} ^ajgo to destruction. And ^akthose who live on the earth, ^alwhose names have not been written in the book of life ^amfrom the foundation of the world, will ^anwonder when they see the beast, that he was, and is not, and will ^{▼▼Lit be present}come. 9 ^apHere is the mind which has wisdom. The ^aqseven heads are seven mountains upon which the woman sits, 10 and they are seven ^arkings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while. 11 The beast which ^aswas, and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he ^atgoes to destruction. 12 The ^auten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast ^avfor one hour. 13 These have ^awone ^{▼▼Or mind}purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.

Victory for the Lamb

14 These will wage ^aywar against the Lamb, and the Lamb will ^azovercome them because He is ^baLord of lords and ^bbKing of kings; and ^bcthose who are with Him are the ^bdcalled and chosen and faithful.”

15 And he *said to me, “The ^bewaters which you saw where the prostitute sits are ^bfpeoples and multitudes, and nations and languages. 16 And the ^bgten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the prostitute and will make her ^bhdesolate and ^binaked, and will ^bjeat her flesh and will ^bkburn her up with fire. 17 For ^blGod has put it in their hearts to execute His ^{▼▼Or mind}purpose ^{▼▼Lit even to do one mind and to give}by ^bohaving a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the ^bpwords of God will be fulfilled. 18 The woman whom you saw is ^bqthe great city, which ^{▼▼Lit has a kingdom}reigns over the kings of the earth.”
